Good and Beautiful Language Arts Program - Grades 1 -High School (eventually)
I recently stumbled upon this little inexpensive GEM of a curriculum in cyberspace. It's called Good and Beautiful and Jenny Phillips is the mastermind behind it all!
Jenny has been working with quite a few other writers to develop a curriculum that is God honoring, very inexpensive (some of it is FREE!), and complete. And I believe she is doing a fabulous job!
I only spent a little while searching through her website and watching a review on youtube before I dove in and bought two levels of Language Arts and the first year of History.
The first 4 levels of Language Arts are available FOR FREE on her website, but they are simply so gorgeous that I knew my printer wouldn't do them justice. Why is that? Because she incorporates art history right into the language arts program, so there are beautiful works of art throughout the entire book! And my kids and I are LOVING these gorgeous, high-quality prints!
Each language arts level includes work in all of the following:
- reading
- writing
- grammar
- vocabulary
- spelling
- art
- geography
All of that in one self-contained spiral notebook (well, 3 notebooks once you get to level 4)! And it's a breeze to just pick up and go! One of the things that drew me to this was that my kids could just pick up their one language arts book and throw it in the car with us when we go to the pool or park this summer. Since we school year round, we need to hit all 4 of our main classes most days (language arts, math, science, and history), and so this is going to make it super easy for us this summer! There are just a few short books that you will need to go along with each level, but you can either get these at the library, or find them cheap and used online. But most of the short books the kids read are actually printed right inside your spiral notebook! So not much need to carry around extra materials!
We are only 10 or so lessons in at this point, as we just started our school year this week, but so far we are loving it! It's so easy to implement, lessons are so quick that we are doing at least 2 lessons a day, and the kids ask to keep going!
My littles are working through Level 2, and my eldest is starting with Level 4. I'm expecting us to go through 2 full levels this summer for each of them, as I picked levels slightly below their ability level. I want to make sure they are progressing on spelling and vocabulary, and so I decided to pull back and just go quicker through the texts. But again, doing 2 lessons a day is still very short and sweet!
For Level 2, the art is being used for narration and focused observation skills, We may write some details about a story that we make up and tell about the painting, or maybe we look for small details. But by Level 4, there is a Creative Companion book that my daughter has that again, is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! And in there, she is learning different techniques with oil pastels. It's my favorite art study I've ever seen, and we've tried several. But what I LOVE is that it's built right into her Language Arts studies, and so it's SURE to get done each day! And again, it really is just gorgeous stuff!
Right now, she has Levels 1-4 and 7 available for free online as a downloadable .pdf, or you can purchase the printed, spiral-bound copy as I HIGHLY recommend! Levels 5 and 6 are almost finished and will be available during the summer. She will also be releasing High School levels starting next summer (to be used immediately following Level 7 - the level numbers do not follow grade levels)!!!
So, jump on over to her website and check it out! You'll be glad you did!
